Changing perceptions from cute to calculated.
After 12 years and 100M+ downloads, The Battle Cats is still seen as just cute and quirky. But behind the charm lies deep strategy.
Inspired by the hit TV series, Shogun, we turned to the Sengoku era, where epic battles were etched into byobu screens. We partnered with a renowned artist and a third-generation byobu master to reimagine over 100 Battle Cats as Sengoku-era icons to help shift perceptions.
The result was a hand-crafted byobu which inspired the game’s developers to create an in-game event stage, two retro samurai films, and a real-world takeover of metro stations in Japan’s largest cities.
